Pregnancy testing

When is the earliest I can take a pregnancy test?

Most sensitive tests can detect pregnancy a few days before a missed period, but the day of your missed period gives the most reliable answer.

Implantation typically happens 6–12 days after ovulation, and hCG only begins to rise after that. Testing before around 10 days past ovulation frequently produces a negative even in a pregnancy that is progressing normally.

Sensitive strip tests (often labelled 10 mIU/mL or 25 mIU/mL) may pick up a pregnancy 2–3 days before a missed period. Testing on or after the day your period is due substantially reduces false negatives.

Very early testing is a common driver of anxiety in the two-week wait. If serial testing is making the wait harder rather than clearer, it is entirely reasonable to test once, on the day your period is due.

The short version

  • hCG only rises after implantation, usually 6–12 days post-ovulation.
  • Day of missed period is the most reliable early timing.
  • First-morning urine is the most concentrated sample.

When to talk to a clinician

  • Negative tests but no period for three weeks or more.
  • A positive result, to book early pregnancy care.
