Choline
The most under-dosed nutrient in prenatal nutrition.
What it is
Choline is an essential nutrient used to build cell membranes and acetylcholine, and it works alongside folate in methylation. Most people do not reach the recommended intake through diet alone, and many prenatals contain little or none.
Why it’s used
- Supports fetal brain development and memory-center formation.
- Partners with folate in one-carbon metabolism.
- Supports healthy liver function and placental transport.
What research says
- The Adequate Intake for pregnancy is 450 mg daily; most pregnant people consume well below that.
- A randomized controlled trial found infants whose mothers consumed 930 mg choline daily showed improved information-processing speed.
- The American Medical Association has called for choline to be included in all prenatal vitamins.
Typical dose: 450–550 mg daily during pregnancy and lactation.
