Vitamin D3

A hormone in disguise — and most of us are low.

What it is

Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) behaves more like a steroid hormone than a vitamin. Receptors for it appear in the ovary, endometrium and placenta, which is why it keeps showing up in fertility research.

Why it’s used

  • Supports healthy immune function and calcium absorption.
  • Vitamin D receptors are present in reproductive tissue.
  • Deficiency is extremely common, especially in northern climates and winter months.

What research says

  • Observational studies associate sufficient vitamin D status with higher clinical pregnancy rates in ART cycles.
  • Cochrane reviews find vitamin D supplementation in pregnancy may reduce risk of pre-eclampsia and low birth weight.
  • Optimal serum 25(OH)D targets are debated; testing is the most reliable way to dose.

Typical dose: 1,000–2,000 IU daily, or as directed after testing your levels.
