Vitex (Chasteberry)

A traditional luteal-phase herb with a modern evidence base.

What it is

Vitex agnus-castus, or chasteberry, is the fruit of the chaste tree. It acts on dopamine receptors in the pituitary, which can influence prolactin levels and, indirectly, the balance of the luteal phase.

Why it’s used

  • Traditionally used for short luteal phases and cycle irregularity.
  • Commonly used for premenstrual symptoms such as breast tenderness and mood shifts.
  • Typically taken in the first half of the cycle or continuously, not during pregnancy.

What research says

  • Randomized placebo-controlled trials report significant reductions in premenstrual syndrome symptom scores with standardized vitex extract.
  • Small studies suggest vitex may lower mildly elevated prolactin and lengthen a short luteal phase.
  • Evidence for direct conception rate improvement remains limited; more high-quality trials are needed.

Typical dose: 20–40 mg standardized extract daily. Discontinue once pregnant.
